History
Canongate was founded in 1973. The company nearly went under in 1994, but became independent again following a management buyout by current Publisher and Managing Director, Jamie Byng. It has since emerged as one of the most dynamic publishing houses in Britain. With a distinctly international outlook, Canongate Books continues to nurture and publish new talent from around the world, whilst retaining the essence of the Scottish Canon. We have no specific agenda other than to promote and publish challenging, quality work from as broad a perspective as we are able. We are one of the founding members of the Independent Alliance, a global alliance of ten UK publishers and their international partners who share a common vision of editorial excellence, original, diverse publishing, innovation in marketing and commercial success. Canongate Books has offices in Edinburgh and London, with partners in New York and Melbourne.

Permissions
Please fill out this form.
Anthology and Quotation Extract Permissions: Please note that at the moment our turnaround time is 3–4 weeks on average, but can be longer in cases where approval must be sought from authors or estates. We cannot grant blanket permissions covering multiple uses or formats on the basis of possible future uses for the material. In most cases there will be a fee due, though all applications are considered on their merits and fair consideration is always given to arguments in favour of a reduction. Our minimum fee for use of a limited amount of material is £50 excluding VAT. We draft our own letters formally granting permissions and issue our own invoices. We are not able to issue double taxation relief forms in cases of payment from foreign bank accounts—the tax must be accounted for on the seeker’s side and the payment made in full. We follow the ‘fair dealing’ guidelines set out by The Society of Authors (cases where formal permissions need not be sought): ‘The Society usually considers as “fair dealing” the use of a single extract of up to 400 words or a series of extracts (of which none exceeds 300 words) to a total of 800 words from a prose work, or of extracts to a total of 40 lines from a poem provided that this does not exceed a quarter of the poem. The words must be quoted in the context of ‘criticism or review’ of the work quoted or of another work. No permission need be sought for such usages provided that the title and the author of the work quoted are credited either in the text itself or in an acknowledgements page.’ www.societyofauthors.org
